Dear Church Family,

When the Children of Israel crossed the Red Sea, they shouted a song of Moses, a song of thanksgiving. Slavery was behind them. Taskmasters were behind them. All the cruelty of Egypt – the house of bondage – was behind them. They shouted for joy.

But in a few short weeks they were weeping, complaining against Moses and complaining against God who had delivered them. So the Lord caused them to wander aimlessly in the desert.

During those long wilderness years there was something missing for the Children of Israel. They were freed from Egypt, but they hadn’t entered into God’s rest, the place where God intended them to be. The Old Testament book of Joshua takes up the narrative right here with the people who crossed over the Jordan and on to victory.

Illustrated in Joshua are the principles of spiritual rest and spiritual victory that produces true rest in the Christian life. As Christians we have been freed from sin and the bondage of this world (Egypt) but are we wandering in a spiritual wilderness or have we crossed over the Jordan to a place of spiritual rest where God wants us to be?

In our next sermon series entitled, ‘The Victorious Christian Life’, we will take a look at this book of Joshua.

Now you might be asking, ‘why plunge into a study of this book that documents a very different point in history and a very foreign culture’?

To me, the book of Joshua is the guidebook to spiritual victory. With the Holy Spirit’s help we will approach it as a picture, an illustration, of our walk with Jesus Christ into His rest.

Contained in the pages of this dynamic Old Testament book are truths with explosive implications for New Testament believers.

God never intended His people to live in spiritual defeat. So let’s not walk around in circles in the wilderness. Rather let’s cross over with Joshua into all God longs for us to be. Step by step, let’s take possession of everything our heavenly Father intends for us to live out and enjoy.

In Joshua we see a picture of the Spirit-filled life and we will come to know in a deeper and more intimate way these words of Jesus,

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls”. (Matthew 11:28–29)

With love in Jesus’ name,
