Cautionary Tales

October 2011

Dear Church Family,

Something that always amazes me is the astounding fact that God still speaks powerfully through the pages of Scripture today. He cuts through 2,000 years of human history, culture and change, overcoming the inadequacies of human communicators, in order to impart timeless truths.

The Bible contains many episodes which are clearly intended to warn us; stories which portray men and women making the wrong choices which all too frequently led to tragic consequences. There are stories of materialism, denial, hypocrisy, pride, backsliding and desires to have pre-eminence; to name but a few.

In our next series of sermons, entitled Cautionary Tales we’ll be looking at some of those accounts with the objective of applying historic Biblical principles to contemporary life in the church and the world today. We will take a look at the portraits of some Biblical characters who learned, or failed to learn, vital lessons. The same dilemmas which confronted them both challenge or tempt us today; and their case histories show the changeless wisdom of God for all human conditions.

Lewis Carroll in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, says that Alice:

“had read several nice little histories about children who had got burnt, and eaten up by wild beasts and other unpleasant things, all because they would not remember the simple rules their friends had taught them: such as, that a red-hot poker will burn you if you hold it too long; and that if you cut your finger very deeply with a knife, it usually bleeds; and she had never forgotten that, if you drink much from a bottle marked ‘poison’, it is almost certain to disagree with you, sooner or later.”

My prayer is that as we explore the histories of these characters we will remember the lessons from their cautionary tales so that we will not be burnt.

With love in Jesus’ name,

Barry Robinson
