Heroes Of The Faith

February 2011

Dear Church Family,

Back in 1977 the punk rock group The Stranglers asked the question: ‘Whatever happened to all the heroes?’ Their answer was: ‘No more heroes anymore’.

Perhaps in a more considered fashion the Los Angeles Times once had an article entitled: ‘Whatever happened to the public heroes of yesterday?’ In this article the journalist wrote:

‘We live in an age of spiritually timid and lacklustre men, for whom the concept of bold leadership is anathema. The leaders of our parents’ generation battled depression, defeated fascism, secured civil rights. Ours seems to have no bigger agenda than to hang on to power. We have come to expect style not substance from our leaders. The ugly, eloquent American Abraham Lincoln, would never be elected today, nor in fact would he run for president, for the ills of our political system are enough to dissuade even the greatest idealists. Is it surprising then that heroic leadership is a thing of the past?’

What is true for the USA is also true for us in the UK.

There is a leader deficit in our nation, and sad to say, in our churches.

There is a desperate need for men and women of all ages and all backgrounds to rise up, to avoid mediocrity, to claim the promises of Christ and live in power in our day and our generation, making a difference to the communities and churches where they come from.

To be the type of people that the writer of the letter to the Hebrews refers to when he says, ‘the world was not worthy of them…These were all commended for their faith…’ (Hebrews 11:38,39)

So we are going to spend some time over the next few weeks looking at some of ‘The Heroes of the Faith’, some of the Old Testament giants, to see what the Scripture teaches us about the people God used in His service and in His purpose.

I hope you’ll find it exciting, as it should remind us that God still wants to use individuals to shape His world, change His church and to bless communities and society as a whole.

It is my prayer that as we look at some of the heroes of the faith you’ll be inspired to go on to heroic leadership, wherever God might lead you.

With love in Jesus’ name,

Barry Robinson
