Dear Church Family,

Essential ingredient or optional extra – what is the place of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians?

If you are in any doubt, notice these comments from the Apostle Paul,

“…if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ...because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God”. (Romans 8:9,14)
“…be filled with the Spirit”. (Ephesian 5:18)

Then we have these words from an ancient creed and from our denomination’s Statement of Beliefs:

“We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets”. (Nicene Creed A.D.325; revised at Constantinople A.D. 381)
“God the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead, eternally proceeding from the Father through the Son. He is the Comforter promised by Jesus Christ, given by the Father to all believers. The Holy Spirit lives in us, unites us with the Father and the Son, and transforms us into the image of Christ through regeneration, repentance, sanctification, and continual renewal. The Holy Spirit is the Source of inspiration and prophecy throughout the Scriptures, and the Source of unity and communion in the church. He provides spiritual gifts for the work of the gospel, and is the Christian's constant Guide into all truth”. (Worldwide Church of God Statement of Beliefs)

The work of the Holy Spirit is necessary for the individual’s new birth and growth to maturity. The Holy Spirit empowers and indwells the church, enabling its constant renewal in truth, wisdom, faith, holiness, love, ministry, power and mission.

The Holy Spirit clearly plays a vital role in the life of Christians and the church, providing much needed guidance and direction.

Little wonder, then that Satan has worked so hard to create division and confusion about the Holy Spirit since he would love us to be without Him.

We cannot, therefore, afford to leave Him out of our church life and teaching – indeed, from our lives.

In the period from Easter, through Ascension to Pentecost, we will be covering a series of sermons on the theme of the Holy Spirit, so that we can come to a better understanding of God’s gift to us and cultivate a closer relationship with our helper and comforter.

I pray that you will find them beneficial.

With love in Jesus’ name,

Barry Robinson
