Water for the Thirsty

X marks the spot

Weekly Devotional

‘As the deer pants for streams of water so my soul pants for you, O God’. (Psalm 42:1)
‘…Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink”…’ (John 7:37)

‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also’. (Matthew 6:21 NIV)

When I was a boy I was fascinated by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Tales of pirates and one-legged seamen with parrots on their shoulders, distant tropical islands with buried treasure and maps with ‘X’ marks the spot.

When I got older I had other islands of treasure about which Jesus had something to say.

I found that I treasured my clothes and yet moths could destroy them (Matt. 6:20 NKJ). I found that I treasured my car and yet it could rust away (V.20 NKJ). I found that I treasured my IPhone and yet thieves could steal it (V.20 NKJ). I found that I treasured a full bank account and yet Jesus says, ‘You cannot serve both God and money’ (V.24 NIV). I found that I treasured being in control of my own life with the ability to plan and decide what I was going to do tomorrow and next month and yet Jesus reminded me ‘do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself’ (V.34 NIV).

I found that I was looking for treasure in the wrong place, and consequently my heart was in the wrong place.

Treasure that is truly going to make me rich is only going to be found in Jesus and his sacrificial death on my behalf. This was something that the Apostle Paul grasped: ‘In [Jesus] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace’ (Eph. 1:7 NIV).

Paul goes on to say, ‘But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God’ (Eph.2:4-8 NIV).

Treasure that’s of real lasting value is not going to be found in physical things but only in what Jesus has done for each one of us.

Perhaps I should have paid more attention to Robert Louis Stevenson and realised that the cross marks the spot where the most valuable treasure of all can be found.

Prayer

Father, thank you for the boundless riches that are ours in Christ Jesus. Help us to treasure them above all else, and may they win our heart.
Amen.

Have a good week searching for treasure,

Pastor Barry
