Water for the Thirsty

God Is Bigger Than…

Weekly Devotional

‘As the deer pants for streams of water so my soul pants for you, O God’. (Psalm 42:1)
‘…Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink”…’ (John 7:37)

30th December 2012

The trouble with me is that I keep forgetting that God is bigger than I can imagine and that He is able to do things that, humanly speaking, are just impossible. And so I need to continually remind myself of what the angel said to Mary in Luke 1:37 ‘For with God nothing will be impossible’. And of course Jesus himself said the same thing in Matthew 19:26 ‘…With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible’.

So I need to reaffirm that God does still work in the lives of human beings including those who seem beyond divine help because they’ve rejected Him for so long.

Abraham simply couldn’t imagine how God could provide him with an heir and so he’d settled for the practice of making his chief servant his heir, something that was common among the nomadic tribes of the day. But God was bigger than Abraham’s expectations.

As Paul says, God is ‘…able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…’ (Ephesians 3:20)

So be encouraged if you feel low in faith. Abraham struggled and questioned and yet he is celebrated as a hero of faith in Hebrews 11:8-12,

‘By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore’. (Hebrews 11:8-12)

Faith is always imperfect and the very best of us stumble and fall. As we approach this New Year, let’s affirm that God is still able to work in what seem to be impossible situations. And if our faith appears to be as tiny as a mustard seed, let’s be encouraged that God celebrates it anyway.

Let’s go into the New Year with the words of Martin Smith on our lips:

My Glorious

The world's shaking with the love of God
Great and glorious, let the whole earth sing
And all you ever do is change the old for new
People we believe that

God is bigger than the air I breathe
The world we'll leave
God will save the day and all will say
My glorious!

Clouds are breaking, heaven's come to earth
Hearts awakening let the church bells ring
And all you ever do is change the old for new
People we believe that

God is bigger than the air I breathe
The world we'll leave
God will save the day and all will say
My glorious!
