Water for the Thirsty

Be a Friend to One Another

Weekly Devotional

‘As the deer pants for streams of water so my soul pants for you, O God’. (Psalm 42:1)
‘…Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink”…’ (John 7:37)

‘A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother’. (Proverbs 18:24 NKJV)

To be friendly a friend should be:

  1. Radical
    • They should love you when you’re unlovable
    • Hug you when you’re un-huggable and
    • Bear you when you’re unbearable.
  2. Fanatical
    • They should cheer when the whole world boos
    • Dance when you get good news and
    • Cry when you cry
  3. Mathematical
    • They should multiply the joy, divide the sorrow
    • Subtract the past, and add to tomorrow
    • Calculate the need deep in your heart and
    • Always be bigger than the sum of all their parts

Let me encourage you to look around and ask yourself this question,

"How many people do I engage with in a way that there is a giving and receiving of spiritual encouragement?”

We have many stories of triumph and failure in all of our lives, and there is a great benefit that can be received from one another as we engage and interact.

As society continues to decline and we get closer to the return of Christ there is going to be an increasing need for us to know how to live the Christian life as a unit.

There has to be interdependence where we share life together as friends; where we face challenges together, pray together and change the world together.

The New Testament repeatedly speaks of our Christian life with one another. For example,

‘Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves’ (Romans 12:10)
‘Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited’. (Romans 12:16)
‘Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God’. (Romans 15:7)
‘Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you’. (2 Corinthians 13:11)

Let us be friends with one another in our Christian family and ‘in [our] relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 2:5)

Have a good week being a friend to one another.
