Water for the Thirsty

Don’t Give Up

Weekly Devotional

‘As the deer pants for streams of water so my soul pants for you, O God’. (Psalm 42:1)
‘…Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink”…’ (John 7:37)

How many times have we all quit something because we got discouraged and simply gave up?

Did you know that during its first year, Coca-Cola only sold 400 bottles of coke? Now they are everywhere all over the earth.

The basketball player Michael Jordan was once dropped from his high school basketball team. This is what he had to say,

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Michael Jordan didn’t quit. He kept trying and is now considered the greatest player in the history of basketball.

Did you know that there was a man who kept trying when others would have quit. If he had given up, the USA would be a different place today.

Here’s his personal history:

  • Failed in business - age 22
  • Ran for Legislature - defeated age 23
  • Again failed in business - age 24
  • Elected to Legislature - age 25
  • Sweetheart died – age 26
  • Had a nervous breakdown - age 27
  • Defeated for Speaker - age 29
  • Defeated for Elector - age 31
  • Defeated for Congress - age 34
  • Elected to Congress - age 37
  • Defeated for Congress - age 39
  • Defeated for Senate - age 46
  • Defeated for Vice President - age 47
  • Defeated for Senate - age 49
  • Elected President of the United States - age 51

That’s the record of Abraham Lincoln. What would the USA look like today if Abraham Lincoln had given up early on?

He stepped into his destiny by getting up and going again.

There are also some Biblical examples of people who didn’t give up:

  • Moses fled from Egypt thinking his life was over, but really it had just begun. He was willing to try again and God sent him back to deliver His people from Pharaoh
  • David was not willing to quit even in the face of a giant named Goliath and look what happened
  • Elijah once prayed to die. But after God refreshed him, he got up and went and found his successor and anointed another king
  • Peter thought it was over after he denied Christ. But he was willing to get up and go again and God used him to preach the first sermon at Pentecost.

And of course, Jesus did not stop until he said “It is finished!

If you are thinking of giving up on your walk with God listen to Paul’s words in Galations 6:9

‘Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up’.

If you are feeling discouraged, let me encourage you to not give up.

The harvest will be there if we keep going.

Have a good week resolving not to give up,

Pastor Barry
