Water for the Thirsty

Grace is…

Weekly Devotional

‘As the deer pants for streams of water so my soul pants for you, O God’. (Psalm 42:1)
‘…Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink”…’ (John 7:37)

What is grace...?

1. Grace is desperately needed

‘for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23)
‘For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord’. (Romans 6:23)

2. Grace is absolutely necessary

We cannot save ourselves.

We cannot save anyone else.

We cannot purchase, bargain, earn, or merit salvation.

‘For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast’. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

3. Grace is abundantly available

‘For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people’. (Titus 2:11)
‘For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!’ (Romans 5:17)

4. Grace is an enabler

It enables us to breaks sins power.

‘For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace’. (Romans 6:14)
‘…grace…teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age’ (Titus 2:11–12)

It enables us to do good works.

‘For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people…who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good’. (Titus 2:11–12)

5. Grace is totally free

‘But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many’! (Romans 5:15)
‘and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus’. (Romans 3:24)

6. Grace is God's power given to live Christ's life

‘With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all’ (Acts 4:33)
‘…by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me’. (1 Corinthians 15:10)

Have a good week pondering on what grace is.
