Water for the Thirsty

7 Up

Weekly Devotional

‘As the deer pants for streams of water so my soul pants for you, O God’. (Psalm 42:1)
‘…Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink”…’ (John 7:37)

The power of the enigma lies in its ability to enthral, to capture the imagination. As a society we delight in the little mysteries that don’t immediately yield up their answers, which is why products whose names we can’t fathom hold their appeal.

One such product is 7 Up.

To this day nobody knows for sure why it’s called 7 Up.

It was created by Charles Grigg in 1929 and was originally given the name "Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda" – Clearly not a winner.

Some of the explanations for the name 7 Up range from it containing 7 ingredients to Grigg once seeing cattle branded with a mark that resembled 7 Up.

But it’s quite possible that the drink’s name was meant to remain an enigma as its creator never publically explained it. Maybe it was a intended to generate interest in the beverage.

Well here are 7 Ups that are not a mystery:

1. Wake Up…decide to have a good day.

‘This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it’. (Psalms 118:24)

2. Dress Up…the best way to dress up is to put on a smile.

‘When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it; the light of my face was precious to them’. (Job 29:24)

A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

3. Shut Up…say nice things and learn to listen.

‘He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin’. (Proverbs 13:3)

God gave us two ears and one mouth, so He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking.

4. Stand Up…for what you believe in.

‘Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people…’ (Galatians 6:9–10)

Stand for something or you will fall for anything.

5. Look Up…to the Lord.

‘For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength’. (Philippians 4:13 NLT)

6. Reach Up…for something higher.

‘Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight’. (Proverbs 3:5–6)

7. Lift Up…your Prayers.

‘Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done’. (Philippians 4:6 NLT)

Have good week drinking in your 7 Up.
